Starting a new job as a software engineering manager is an exciting but challenging endeavor. As you step into a leadership role, you will oversee projects, lead a team of engineers, and contribute to the organization's overall success. Here are some ideas to ensure a smooth start and long-term success in your new position.

30-60-90 Day Plan

Before your first day on the job, develop a plan for your first 30, 60, and 90 days. Review this plan with your boss within the first day or two. A 30-60-90-day plan should include tasks and goals to achieve each month. The plan can be divided into learning, making connections, team dynamics, process analysis, proposed improvements, and other themes. Here is a simple outline of a plan that can be used as a starting point.

  • 30 Day Plan: Learning & Connecting - List items required to learn the technology and connect with others
  • 60 Day Plan: Contributing & Proposing - List items where you are proposing changes and contributing where possible
  • 90 Day Plan: Leading & Executing - List items where you are demonstrating leadership

Tips for New Managers

  • Team Dynamics & Relationships: Before making any significant changes or introducing new processes, take the time to understand the existing team dynamics. Get to know your team members individually, learn about their strengths and weaknesses, and understand how they collaborate. I recommend spending at least 1 month or more learning about the team before you propose changes.
  • Manager & Team Expectations: Clearly define your expectations for your team and communicate them effectively. Be transparent about your management style, priorities, and goals. Establishing clear expectations will help your team understand their roles and responsibilities, fostering a sense of accountability and alignment toward common objectives. I recommend sharing your management philosophy and any specific team expectations.
  • Communication & Collaboration: Encourage open, honest, and transparent communication within your team. Create a culture where team members feel comfortable sharing their ideas, concerns, and feedback. Regular team meetings, one-on-one sessions, and feedback loops can promote a healthy and collaborative work environment.
  • Culture of Growth & Ownership: Prioritize your team members' professional development. Support them in acquiring new skills, attending conferences, and staying updated on industry trends. A motivated and skilled team is essential for long-term success, and investing in their growth will foster loyalty and productivity.
  • Work Environment: While dedication to work is essential, prioritizing work-life balance is equally important. Encourage your team to maintain a healthy balance between work and personal life and lead by example. A well-rested and satisfied team is likelier to be creative, productive, and engaged.
